My entire life, I have had an appreciation for journalism. After spending three years as part of my high school's award-winning newspaper, I wanted to further my understanding of media and its role in society. During my time on the school paper, I saw multiple roles. From staff writer to page editor to managing editor, I learned so much about what it means to work ethically, collaboratively and effectively in journalism. Being part of the Media, Self, and Society scholars program has allowed me to further my interest in journalism while I major in something else- Criminology and Criminal Justice. I am intrigued by the corrections and legal systems, but what peaked my interest in this field was the media's exposure of the horrible injustices. Media coverage during the Black Lives Matter movement, documentaries like When They See Us, and books like Just Mercy, have played a huge role in educating me and many others. It is extremely evident, now more than ever, how crucial the media's role is in educating and exposing injustices, and encouraging change. My goal is to do all I can in the future to prevent further injustices and reform our criminal justice system. I hope to learn more about both my interests and how they intertwine. - November 9, 2020
